Strategic Alliances and the Mandu Yenu Throne: Colonial Diplomacy, Mediation, and the Ethics of Cultural Restitution

Strategic Alliances and the Mandu Yenu Throne: Colonial Diplomacy, Mediation, and the Ethics of Cultural Restitution

Abstract This study examines the diplomatic strategies of King Njoya of Bamum during the German colonial era, focusing on the symbolic significance of the Mandu Yenu throne as a lens to explore power dynamics, negotiation, and cultural resilience. Through a comparative analysis of African leaders who navigated colonial pressures, this paper highlights the adaptive leadership and mediation strategies employed to preserve autonomy and cultural identity. The research integrates observations from a visit to the Humboldt Forum, where the throne is currently housed, and connects these insights to contemporary debates on cultural restitution, restorative justice, and decolonization. As a Systemic Psychological Coach-Lecturer and Certified German Mediator, the author draws parallels between historical diplomacy and modern conflict resolution frameworks. The study concludes with policy recommendations promoting dialogue, cultural exchange, and ethical restitution practices that emphasize empathy, resilience, and systemic thinking in leadership and mediation. Keywords: colonial diplomacy, Mandu Yenu throne, King Njoya, cultural restitution, mediation, adaptive leadership, systemic coaching, restorative justice, decolonization

Cultural Trauma and Colonial Acquisition: A Systemic Analysis of Ethnographic Artifacts from the Cameroon Grasslands (North West and West Regions) during the German Colonial Era

Cultural Trauma and Colonial Acquisition: A Systemic Analysis of Ethnographic Artifacts from the Cameroon Grasslands (North West and West Regions) during the German Colonial Era

Abstract The Cameroon Grasslands, encompassing the North West and West Regions, are renowned for their rich cultural diversity, artistic traditions, and complex socio-political structures. During the German colonial period (1884–1916), ethnographic artifacts including Türpfosten (doorposts), Türrahmen (door frames), royal thrones, and ceremonial objects were systematically collected, often through coercion or exploitation. This study examines the cultural, historical, and psychological dimensions of these artifacts, focusing on their provenance, symbolism, and the role of German collectors such as Hans Glauning and Heinrich Picht. By integrating systemic psychological analysis, postcolonial theory, and archival research, this work explores the intergenerational trauma, cultural resilience, and contemporary debates on repatriation. The methodology combines visual analysis, oral histories, and critical engagement with colonial archives, offering a holistic understanding of the Grasslands' material culture and its global diaspora.

"Cultural Resilience and Symbolic Power: A Systemic Analysis of Bamum Doorposts in the Grassfields Region of Cameroon"

Abstract This article examines the Bamum doorposts from Cameroon’s Grassfields region, currently housed in Berlin’s Humboldt Forum, through a systemic and interdisciplinary lens. While the analysis focuses on the Bamum, it acknowledges the cultural continuity of similar artifacts across the Grassfields region. The study explores how these doorposts embody power, identity, and spiritual connection, while also addressing the ethical implications of their colonial acquisition and display. Drawing on systemic coaching, cultural mediation, and postcolonial theory, this article highlights the role of such artifacts in fostering resilience and intercultural dialogue, particularly for migrant and diaspora communities. The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon: A Systemic Psychological and Intercultural Perspective on Trauma, Reconciliation, and the Role of Faith in Mediation

The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon: A Systemic Psychological and Intercultural Perspective on Trauma, Reconciliation, and the Role of Faith in Mediation

The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon has created a multilayered humanitarian emergency, marked by systemic trauma, economic disruption, and deep intercultural divisions. As a Certified German Mediator and Systemic Psychological Coach, I approach this conflict through an inter disciplinary lens, combining empirical data, mediation frameworks, and cultural healing practices. My professional experience including successful mediations in international contract disputes and marital conflicts demonstrates how structured dialogue and trauma-informed approachescan resolve even the most entrenched conflicts. For example, in 2023, I mediated an international contract dispute for an organization, where my intervention led to a favorable outcome, affirming the effectiveness of interest-based negotiation in cross-cultural conflicts. Similarly, in a marriage counseling case, I helped a couple realize that their scale of preferences and priorities could be discussed without hostility, leading to a sustainable agreement. These experiences underscore the transferable potential of mediation in Cameroon’s context, where political, linguistic, and religious divisions have fractured families and communities. The crisis has displaced nearly 1 million people (International Crisis Group, 2022) and left 51% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) with PTSD symptoms (PLOS One, 2024). Families are divided by political ideologies, linguistic identities, and economic pressures, while unresolved trauma risks becoming intergenerational (Yehuda et al., 2014). As a mediator, I recognize that without structured intervention, these divisions can persist for decades, as seen in post-conflict regions like Rwanda and Bosnia (Lederach, 2005). However, Germany’s post-WWII reconciliation model which combined truth-telling, reparations, and dialogue offers a blueprint for Cameroon, provided it is adapted to the local cultural and political context.

Cultural Sensitivity and the Porcupine Spike: A Reflexive Perspective on Intercultural Learning

Abstract This reflective perspective examines how cultural symbols can be misinterpreted when removed from their original cultural context. Using a personal experience involving the symbolic meaning of a porcupine spike within the Nso cultural tradition of Cameroon, the article explores cultural humility, reflexivity, and ethical responsibility in intercultural encounters. Drawing on theories of intercultural competence and reflective practice, the paper argues that intercultural learning is an ongoing ethical process rather than a fixed skill. The article contributes to applied intercultural scholarship by offering a practice-grounded example relevant to educators, mediators, coaches, and practitioners working in multicultural settings.

The Bansa/Bamum and Banso "Speaking Drums" of Cameroon: Cultural Resilience, Communication, and the Power of Storytelling

Abstract The "speaking drums" of Cameroon’s Grassfields kingdoms crafted by the Bansa, Bamum, and Banso peoples are profound artifacts that embody the intersection of cultural heritage, communication, and resilience. This article explores their historical significance, symbolic craftsmanship, and contemporary relevance, drawing parallels to systemic coaching, mediation, and cultural entrepreneurship. By examining the drums’ role in long-distance communication, governance, and storytelling, this study offers insights into their potential to inspire modern leadership, cross-cultural dialogue, and academic discourse. The article also addresses the ethical implications of their exhibition in global museums, such as the Humboldt Forum, and advocates for a restorative approach to cultural heritage. Personal photographs and reflections by the author provide a unique perspective on the drums’ enduring legacy.

From Light to Dark: Coffee Roasting as My Grandfather Fai Casmia Bello Taught Me Preserving Nso African Coffee Heritage Through Generational Roasting Techniques

Abstract This autoethnographic study explores the intergenerational transmission of coffee roasting knowledge from the author’s grandfather, Fai Casmia Bello, in Nkar Village, Cameroon, to the establishment of Coffee Bello Potsdam in Germany. The article highlights the African origins of coffee “Arabica” from Ethiopia and Robusta from the Congo Basin and examines how traditional hand-roasting techniques, adapted for light, medium, and dark roasts, preserve cultural heritage while meeting modern consumer preferences. The study also discusses the historical introduction of coffee to the Nso tribe by Catholic missionaries and how the author’s grandfather became one of the first to cultivate coffee in the region. The signature blend, "Afrikanische Sehnsucht", combines Rwandan Arabica and Ugandan Robusta, showcasing how African coffee traditions can drive authenticity, sustainability, and innovation in the global market. Keywords: African coffee heritage, Arabica, Robusta, Uganda Ngoma, Nso tribe, artisanal roasting, roasting spectrum, sensory science, cultural preservation, sustainable entrepreneurship, intergenerational knowledge

Restitution of Cultural Heritage: Justice, Identity, and Reconciliation

Abstract: The restitution of cultural heritage stands at the intersection of historical justice, postcolonial accountability, and cultural rights. This article examines restitution as a legal, ethical, and sociocultural process aimed at returning cultural objects removed through colonialism, conflict, or illicit trade to their communities of origin. Drawing on scholarship in heritage studies, international law, and museum ethics, this paper discusses restitution in relation to justice, identity, and reconciliation. A reflective perspective, informed by the author’s experience as a German-certified mediator, entrepreneur, and advocate for African cultural heritage, illustrates how restitution intersects with lived experience, community memory, and intercultural dialogue. Currently conducting research at Museumsinsel Berlin for an upcoming book, the author integrates personal insights from navigating legal challenges, cultural integration, and entrepreneurship. The study argues that restitution contributes not only to material return but also to symbolic repair and relational justice.

Myth, Justice, and Restitution: The Chibinda Ilunga Statue as a Symbol of Cultural Resilience and Legal Struggle By Edward Dzerinyuy Bello

Abstract The Chibinda Ilunga statue, displayed in Berlin’s Humboldt Forum, encapsulates the intersection of African myth, colonial history, and contemporary debates on cultural restitution. This analysis explores the statue’s role as a cultural artifact, its mythological significance for the Lunda and Chokwe peoples, and the ethical and legal dilemmas surrounding its display. Drawing on my experiences as a certified German mediator and a systemic psychological coach I argue for a restorative justice framework in cultural heritage disputes, paralleling my own legal struggles for accountability in Germany’s judicial system.

The Restoration of the Collective Psyche: Ngonnso’ and the Systemic Mediation of Colonial Trauma

The Restoration of the Collective Psyche: Ngonnso’ and the Systemic Mediation of Colonial Trauma

Abstract This study examines the century long displacement of the Ngonnso’ statue the ancestral mother of the Nso’ people through the dual lens of German systemic psychological counseling and Nso’ traditional mediation. Currently housed in Berlin’s Humboldt Forum, Ngonnso’ transcends the category of a mere "museum object" to emerge as a vital node in a transnational systemic field. By integrating conflict mediation frameworks (Hellinger, 2001), systemic resilience theory (Bello, 2026), and postcolonial trauma studies (Fanon, 1963; Mbembe, 2017), this paper argues that Ngonnso’s restitution is a necessary act of systemic re-ordering. The analysis demonstrates how reconciling German legalistic mediation with Nso’ ontological healing offers a revolutionary blueprint for global restorative justice, with implications for museum ethics, transnational law, and cultural psychology. Keywords: Systemic mediation, postcolonial trauma, restorative justice, Nso’ cosmology, German conflict resolution, cultural restitution, collective psyche

The Intersectional Legacy of the Uhunmwun Elao: Art, Power, and Ancestry in the Benin Kingdom By Edward Dzerinyuy Bello

Abstract The Uhunmwun Elao, the memorial head of the Queen Mother (Iyoba), stands as one of the most accomplished traditions of West African copper-alloy casting. Based on direct observation of Benin artworks at the Humboldt Forum, this article examines the Uhunmwun Elao as both a political instrument and a spiritual medium. It argues that the memorial head institutionalized female authority while anchoring governance in ancestral legitimacy within the Benin Kingdom. The analysis also explores how the removal of these works during the 1897 British Punitive Expedition disrupted their cultural function, placing them at the center of contemporary debates on provenance, restitution, and cultural memory.

The Silent Mediator: A Systemic Analysis of Nefertiti’s Bust in Berlin’s North Dome Room

Abstract The Bust of Nefertiti (c. 1345 BCE) is more than an artifact of aesthetic mastery it is a systemic anchor at the nexus of history, architecture, and psychological mediation. This analysis, grounded in direct observation at Berlin’s Neues Museum, examines the bust’s placement in the North Dome Room as a non-verbal mediator between viewers and the fragmented narratives of the Amarna period. Using systemic coaching methodologies (reframing, circular questioning), the study reveals how the artifact’s isolation, architectural framing, and contested provenance create a space for mindful reflection on cultural heritage, memory, and the beauty of the incomplete. The bust’s "broken symmetry" (the missing left eye) is reframed as an invitation to engage with history as an ongoing dialogue, not a closed narrative.

The Paradox of Arabica in the North West Region of Cameroon, Nso Tribe, Nkar Village: We Grow the Best, Yet Seldom Drink It.

In the Nso Highlands of Cameroon, farmers grow some of the finest Arabica coffee, yet rarely drink it themselves. Most is exported, while communities remain unaware of its value. In Germany, Arabica is culture, health, and human connection. It brings people together and supports well-being. Arabica is rich in antioxidants, smooth in taste, and full of potential. We should not stop exporting, but we should begin roasting, tasting, and promoting it at home. We have the land and the beans. Now we need the habit, pride, and culture.

A Nation at the Crossroads: Reawakening Holy Prof. Bernard Nsokika Fonlon’s Vision for Moral Leadership, Youth Renewal, and Ecclesial Integrity in Cameroon

Abstract This paper reawakens the ethical vision of Holy Prof. Dr. Bernard Nsokika Fonlon and applies it to the moral and civic challenges of English-speaking Cameroon today. Drawing on Under the Sign of the Rising Sun (1964) and An Open Letter to the Bishops of Buea and Bamenda, it stresses the importance of moral leadership, disciplined youth formation, and a Church free from political influence. The message is simple and urgent: conscience must lead; the youth must rise in character; and the Church must remain a light of truth, humility, and transparent service.

“As I See It” Revisited: Re-Reading Holy Prof. Dr. Bernard Nsokika Fonlon’s Legacy and Emancipation

Abstract This paper revisits the moral, intellectual, and spiritual legacy of Holy Prof. Dr. Bernard Nsokika Fonlon (1924–1986), one of Africa’s most profound thinkers whose writings continue to shape the philosophical and ethical discourse of postcolonial societies and the neocolonial period in which we live. Through works such as As I See It, The Genuine Intellectual, The Task of the Educated Man, and Under the Rising Sun, Fonlon called for mental, moral, and cultural emancipation as the foundation of authentic civilization. This paper re-reads his vision in light of 21st-century challenges neo-colonialism, moral fatigue, cultural imitation, and psychological dependency and integrates it with contemporary intercultural experiences from Germany. The argument advanced is that Fonlon’s philosophy of conscience remains the most urgent path toward liberation: a revolution not of weapons or politics, but of the human spirit.

Abstract This reflective journal explores the enduring moral philosophy of Bernard Nsokika Fonlon, focusing on his works Under the Sign of the Rising Sun and Genuine Intellectuals: Academic and Social Responsibilities of Universities in Africa. Fonlon’s idea of the “genuine intellectual” and his vision of a moral awakening under the rising sun form the foundation for understanding the relationship between knowledge, conscience, and service. Through personal reflection rooted in contemporary experience, the author connects Fonlon’s intellectual and ethical ideals to daily life in modern Europe, highlighting the ongoing relevance of conscience, intercultural dialogue, and service to humanity. The paper argues that Fonlon’s message transcends time and geography, calling for the rebirth of moral leadership and the union of intellect and virtue in public and private life.

Honesty and Being Yourself Is Golden

Honesty and Being Yourself Is Golden

Entrepreneurship is often portrayed as a race for wealth or a sprint to success, but for me, it has always been about something deeper: honesty, values, and legacy. My journey has been shaped not just by business decisions but by a family tradition of resilience, faith, and enterprise—from my great-grandfather’s bamboo chairs to my parents’ teaching and coffee estates. These experiences planted the seeds of an entrepreneurial spirit grounded in authenticity. In my work today—whether writing books, nurturing Coffee Bello Potsdam, coaching, or investing—I hold onto a single guiding principle: stay true to myself and honest with others. Honesty builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any lasting success. While I had planned to launch my new book Two Cultures One Mind in the USA this fall, life took a different turn with the birth of Coffee BELLO Potsdam. What started as a vision has grown into a brand embraced by German coffee lovers for its aroma, quality, and taste. This path is not mine alone—it carries the prayers of my daughter, the wisdom of my parents, the legacy of my grandparents, and the memory of my late godfather who gave his life to coffee. With the dedication of my German partners, investors, and roasting master Mathias, I now stand as one of the first Africans to introduce coffee roasted in Germany in my own unique style. Books and coffee—two very different vessels, yet both serve the same purpose in my life: to inspire, to create awareness, and to share hope.

Yet behind these stark statistics lies an invisible battlefield: the human mind. This article shines a light on the silent epidemic of psychological trauma that has seeped into homes, schools, markets, and even the diaspora. Drawing from professional experience as a systemic psychological coach, certified German mediator, and a native of Cameroon’s conflict-affected North West Region, the author uncovers how cultural norms, limited infrastructure, and entrenched stigma create a perfect storm of neglect. Through a blend of research, field observations, and lived narratives, this work calls for urgent policy reforms, culturally grounded interventions, and international solidarity to treat mental health not as a peripheral concern—but as a core element of peace building.
